When you were 15, she came home from work, looking for a hug. You thanked her by having your bedroom door locked.

When you were 16, she taught you how to drive her car. You thanked her by taking it every chance you could.

When you were 17, she was expecting an important call. You thanked her by being on the phone all night.

Teenagers and young adults who listen to MP3 players too loudly and too often risk going deaf 30 years earlier than their parents' generation, a charity warned.

Deafness Research UK said a national survey in Britain showed that 14 per cent of 16-34-year-olds use their personal music players for 28 hours a week.

More than a third of the 1,000 people questioned in the poll said they had ringing in the ear, a sign of damage to hearing, after listening to loud music.

"We are warning young people that they are putting themselves at risk of going deaf 30 years earlier than their parents' generation," said Vivienne Michael, chief executive of Deafness Research UK.

Young people are exposed to loud noise from MP3 players, sophisticated sound systems in homes, clubs and cars but many are unaware of the damaging effect it can have on hearing.

Nearly 40 per cent of the people questioned in the poll said they did not know that listening to loud music on a personal music player or in clubs or cars could damage their hearing.

Twenty-eight per cent said they went to noisy bars, pubs or nightclubs once a week.

"Hearing loss can make life unbearable. It cuts people off from their family and friends and makes everyday communication extremely difficult," Michael said in a statement.

The charity advises people to follow the 60-60 rule. Do not listen to your MP3 player at more than 60 per cent of maximum volume and do not listen to it for more than 60 minutes at a time.

It added that if the music from a headset is loud enough for the people around to hear, then it is loud enough to cause hearing damage.

Noise levels exceeding 105 decibels can damage hearing if endured for more than 15 minutes, according to Britain's Health and Safety Executive.

Normal conversation is about 60 decibels. Heavy traffic is about 85 decibels and loud personal music players are 112 decibels.

Mint security lapse amazes judge

A judge has criticised security at the Royal Australian Mint while jailing a worker who stole more than $130,000 by hiding new $2 coins in his boots and lunchbox.

Justice Terry Connolly, in the ACT Supreme Court, said William Grzeskowiac had committed a significant breach of trust over a long period, and sent him to prison for three years, with a non-parole period of 18 months.

But Justice Connolly also criticised security at the mint, saying he was amazed a theft on this scale could happen.

The court heard Grzeskowiac, 48, of the southern Canberra suburb of Monash, simply scooped coins from the production line into his pockets before transferring them to his boots or lunchbox in a toilet cubicle.

Over a 10-month period he walked out with an average of $600 a day.

Justice Connolly expressed astonishment that the mint's security procedures were so lax.

"I find it hard to believe that 150 coins could be concealed in each boot and a person could still walk through the security system," he said.

Justice Connolly also said he was amazed the mint could give no indication of just how many coins had actually gone missing.

"I would like to think those working at the other mint factory printing $100 notes might be subject to a better system of security," he said.

Justice Connolly accepted Grzeskowiac stole $135,852, of which most has been recovered. The sum of $126,000 in coins was found in buckets and bags in the garage of his mother's home in nearby Queanbeyan.

Another $4598 in coins and $1140 in notes was found when he was arrested in Bendigo, Victoria, in January. He had raised suspicions after trying to exchange quantities of coins for notes at various businesses.

He admitted exchanging, spending or giving away $4000 and Justice Connolly ordered him to repay that sum.

However, the prosecution alleged Grzeskowiac had actually disposed of the much larger sum of $23,310, making his total theft more than $155,000.

Prosecutor John White said entries in Grzeskowiac's diary suggested he had conducted a number of shopping and road trips specifically to exchange coins for notes.

Justice Connolly said just why Grzeskowiac stole the coins was not clear.

Grzeskowiac said it started out of a sense of grievance following an argument with his boss and ended up as a challenge that produced a sense of empowerment. A psychological report said he was motivated by a need for security.

Grzeskowiac's defence counsel, Steven Whybrow, said he was a person of previous good character and what had happened was a bizarre aberration.

"There is no evidence that this was for gambling or drinking or some other addiction or avarice. All the evidence is that he is a simple man with simple needs," he said.

Justice Connolly said a consequence of Grzeskowiac's breach of trust was that mint workers, once trusted, now faced a far more intrusive security regime.

"Your conduct is going to make life much more unpleasant for every other worker at the mint," he said.

Put your iPod on pause for a moment. There is something you should know: The Chinese factory workers who assembled your music player work long hours and do not earn a lot of money.

Many of these workers are employed by Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., a Taiwanese contract manufacturer known by its Foxconn brand, the Mail On Sunday, a U.K. newspaper, reported last weekend.

Low-paid workers toil long hours at Hon Hai's Longhua, China, plant to produce Apple Computer's popular iPod nano music player, the newspaper said. It put the monthly salary of these workers at 27pounds (AU$67.79). Workers at a different company that produces the iPod shuffle were paid 54pounds per month. These workers paid for their own room and board, which amounted to around half of their salary, it said.

The manufacturing relationship between Apple and Hon Hai is typical in the electronics industry.

In most cases, electronics manufacturing isn't handled by the company that sells the final product, but by a contract manufacturer. Vendors squeeze the contract manufacturers hard to boost their own profit margins, often playing one off against another to get the lowest price. In turn, contract manufacturers look to reduce their costs as much as possible, and that means keeping wages low.

This hard truth explains how corporations can produce affordable electronic products, such as computers, game consoles, and digital music players, that are exported to the U.S. and Europe.

"The monthly wages earned are, yes, low. However, the buying power of those wages can put food on the table," said Danny Levinson [CQ], publisher and editor of BDL Media's ChinaCSR.com, a corporate social responsibility Web site.

The greater purchasing power of the renminbi, China's currency, was noted in a 2005 report on Chinese factory wages commissioned by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. "Prices of goods and services vary greatly among countries, and the official exchange rate is not a reliable indicator of the relative difference in prices between China and other countries," the report said.

Most manufacturers, including Hon Hai, rely on migrant workers for labor. These workers, usually young women, come from China's poorer rural areas in search of jobs and a salary. For these workers, a monthly salary of AU$67.79, plus room and board, is more than can be earned at home and provides an important financial boost for their families.

Workers are often housed in company dormitories, usually within the same compound as the factory. Security can be tight. Most factories have security guards stationed at outside gates and entrances to the factory.

For example, at Dell's manufacturing plant in Xiamen, workers pass through a metal detector when leaving the factory. The measure was designed to prevent the theft of valuable computer components, such as memory modules, that can quickly drive up the company's manufacturing costs.

Apple is taking the allegations of difficult working conditions at Hon Hai seriously, it said.

"Apple is committed to ensuring that working conditions in our supply chain are safe, workers are treated with respect and dignity, and manufacturing processes are environmentally responsible," it said, noting that claims made in the Mail On Sunday report are being investigated.
